We’re talking about social media branding here.
So, I’m sure you have a Facebook account, right?
You have Twitter as well, right?
Have you registered your username on the other top sites before someone else takes them?
Do it now! Before it’s gone.
You see, I know first hand how frustrating this can be.
Imagine you create a business and get the domain name. You create a Twitter account and create a Facebook page. Cool, right? You are branding yourself online!
Imagine your business growing and now you’re starting to incorporate video, images, audio into your online presence.
You go to register your business on YouTube but it’s taken! It’s taken on Flickr too!
There’s a couple of things you can do.
- You can try and buy the usernames from the current owner, like the country of Israel did.
- You can try and take it legally.
If they took the username legally, it’s theirs. Yes, there are cyber squatters who think of great usernames and register just to be offered money for them.
Even if you don’t think you’re going to use your username on the top social sites right now, you should still make sure YOUR name is YOURS. So it’s there when you’re ready.

PS. I told you I know first hand how this can affect you, right? Well I have my name @mscopeland at most of the social sites, but not YouTube or some others. I have moved into doing a lot of video now and it would be greatly beneficial to have my name across all platforms to brand myself properly.
