UN Uses Social Media to Raise Awareness for Malaria

March 15, 2010

unitednations1The United Nation’s Special Envoy for Malaria will be announcing a special Social Media Envoy group that would be using the far reach and power of social media in order to help raise awareness for malaria control in Africa.

The special Social Media Envoy is composed of well known figures from both the broadcast media and the social web. Those that have joined this group have pledged to do their part and to taking social action – like a Tweet or a Facebook post each month for the next year starting on the World Malaria Day which takes place on April 25.

1255980033_event_imageThe group aims to motivate the social media audiences to support malaria control through tweets, posts and other social media actions that can inspire people to support this cause. The United Nation’s goal is to provide all endemic African countries to have malaria control through interventions by the end of 2010. They aim to work towards near zero deaths from malaria by the year 2015.

Using the power of social media in the fight against Malaria is a good move for the United Nations. The disease is something that everyone malaria1should be aware about and this should be controlled immediately. Malaria takes one million victims to their death each year and 90% of those deaths happen in Sub-Saharan Africa.

There is a lot of money needed to be raised and there is a lot of work to be done for this cause. It would be better if the group would be able to go beyond the once a month social action that they have committed to. Malaria after all is not an easy battle to cope with.

The 2010 Social Media Envoys are the following:

  • Derrick Ashong, Musician, Social Activist & Oprah Radio host

The Real Dalai Lama is now in Twitter

February 24, 2010

A lot of celebrities and well known public personalities are joining the Twitter bandwagon. Even religious leaders can not get awaydalai-lama from the online craze. If you need proof, the Dalai Lama has joined the social media giant recently this week.

It can be recalled that there was a @Dalai Lama account before but it was proven to be faked. The said Dalai Lama account had fooled the media and this event had played a great role in Twitter’s verification of accounts especially for those who can have great influences to the public such as the Dalai Lama himself.

This time, Twitter was able to verify Dalai Lama and confirms that this is the real thing although the Dalai Lama has not posted any personal messages or tweets yet so far. If you check his account you would see that it is pulling out blog posts and albums from the official Dalai Lama website and are twitting them through the twitterfeed. But it can be assured that you would be seeing real engagement from the Dalai Lama later on.

DalailamaEvan Williams, founder of Twitter, posted a message this week that he had just met the Dalai Lama in Los Angeles and had a talk with him about using Twitter. He said that the Dalai Lama used to laugh at the thought of using social media but now the Dalai Lama himself has his own official Twitter site set up by his office in India.

It is no doubt now that Twitter is now one of the best ways for you to get to know better well known personalities and get to hear their message right from the horse’s mouth.

Kikin Lets You Add Social Media to Your Web Browsing

February 18, 2010

KikinVideoPlayerKikin is the newest browser plugin for Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer that adds some rich social media context to your web browsing experience as you search and surf the World Wide Web.

As the pioneer of user-centricity, Kikin is surely putting a change on how people are finding and using the information that they need in the internet.

There are different search engines available these days that are cramming more relevant information to the top of their search results. The thing is that they are getting their data from networks and places that are not consistent. Kikin can add to that lacking consistency.

All you have to do is to choose the sites that you want Kikin to hunt for in your searches when you search for a topic so that you can get them at the top of your results page. Let’s say you prefer to get data from Wikipedia or Bing or Hulu – then these sites would be at the top of your results page. This way you steer clear from web sites that have nothing to do with what you really want.

screenshot-opera_browser__faster__safer_internet__free_download_-_operaIf you get connected to your Facebook or Twitter account you can see comments that would be related to the topic that you are searching for as well either from your friends or from other public comments in the site. When you view a video clip on YouTube or when you look at a movie on Amazon.com then a Kikin bar will show up at the top of the page that can show you the recent searches for that item and feedback from Facebook, Twitter or other options. You do not have to worry about this bar since you can easily close it as well.

For media searches like music, movies and TV shows, Kikin has a menu that is very easy to navigate and has a nice context. You will find this to be more convenient compared to going through the individual sites.

One more thing that you will love about Kikin is that you are able to share content that you find in your web browsing easily on your Twitter, Facebook or e-mail account.

TweetsGiving Hopes to Raise $100,000 for Charity

November 25, 2009

Last year, Twitter launched their TweetsGiving program and almost raised $11,000 which enabled them to build a classroom in Tanzania. This year, the Thanksgiving Twitter program is back and they are aiming to raise $100,000 in 48 hours for charity scheduled for November 24 to 26 2009.

tweetsgivingAs a background check, TweetsGiving is a global volunteer and non profit organization that uses social media for its charity drive every Thanksgiving. The program was made to support Epic Change and to help build additional classrooms, a library, a cafeteria and a dormitory for a school in Arusha, Tanzania. It is recognized as a global celebration done online that aims to change the world through gratitude. The 48 hour event also has live events all over the globe where guests are invited in order to encourage people to give to a common cause.

tweetsgiving2The school that you will be helping is a school founded by a Tanzanuan Epic Change fellow known as “Mama Lucy” Kamptoni who used to sell chickens and used her earnings to build a school that now has 300 children and facilities are much needed. It is easy to participate in this fundraiser and give your own donations for this cause. First you can simply share whatever you are thankful for on Twitter, Flickr, your blog,  YoutTube, Facebook or blip.fm  then add the link to www.TweetsGiving.org and the #tweetsgiving tag. Another way to contribute to the success of this program is to contribute in cash. Each $10 donation equates to 1 brick for the development of the school in Tanzania. Next year, Epic Change and Twitter aims to widen their campaign by reaching out to other parts of the world beginning next year. This Thanksgiving, why not show your gratitude by giving back?

Twitter Lists Improves

November 20, 2009

birdandt_tcm18-151058

Twitter, one of the biggest Social Media sites in the World Wide Web has launched a new feature a few weeks ago called Twitter Lists. This feature has got users of the micro blogging excited allowing them to make lists of Twitter users that other users can follow.

This allows Twitter users to organize other users that they follow into groups or lists. Lists can be a stream of stories, breaking news, or tweets from the users who are behind the stories. The Twitter Lists can be public for the entire world to see and they can be private for personal use.

function_twitter_freeBasically, Twitter Lists have three aims: to organize your followers and the people you are following, to lists out recommendations for the Twitter users to follow and third is to make a list in order to measure the influence that they have. But a weakness was immediately spotted in the list and that is the fact that there is no way to describe what the list was all about. And now, Twitter is making improvements in their Twitter Lists feature starting out by applying the number one suggestion and request of Twitter users which is descriptions. Before, you can find that there is only a title indicated in the Twitter Lists.

Now, when you edit any list, you will find that you can place in a description which will allow you to describe your list in a hundred characters or less. All you have to do is to visit the list page, click “Edit” which can be found at the top right of the edit page, add a description then save.

Now that Twitter has a description field available you can now use short and snappy titles and be able to give a more effective description on what the list is all about.

Facebook Pages or Facebook Groups – the Big Difference

November 5, 2009

Facebook is one of the best sites used for social media marketing but there are people out there who are confused as to which they should create in order to use the social networking site to their advantage effectively. The confusion is based entirely on the Groups and Pages features of Facebook. Even senior media marketing consults are confused since both have overlapping features. Add the constant changes Facebook makes to their Pages and the whole issue becomes more complicated.

Here are some factors that you should consider when it comes to choosing which is right for your project:

  • Interaction – because of Facebook Group’s security features and size limitations (under 5,000 members) they are more set for personal interaction. While Facebook Pages on the other hand do not list the names of its administrators and are thought of more as a corporate entity. The content of Facebook Groups is an extension of personal actions while content in Pages does not need to be linked back to you personally.
  • Updates – for Groups, as long as they are below 5,000 members, you can send messages to the members that will appear in their Inboxes. For Pages, they can send their updates to their own Page and will also appear in the “Updates” section of their inboxes. Unlike Groups, there are no limits on how many updates you can send or how many fans you must have.
  • Control – Groups have more control over who can participate. The permission settings can help you restrict access to a group or person. Access to Pages can only be restricted by age and location.
  • Moderation – both Pages and Groups can be mediocre when it comes to how things are posted and who can post. If someone posts spam or something negative in your Group or Page you will have to remove it manually but you have the option to remove the member who did it.
  • Advertising – advertisements can be bought to promote both Groups and Pages. But Pages have the benefit of having exposure through the fan connection that they have as they can be posted on their walls.
  • One more difference that can help you is that Pages are indexed by major search engines like Google while Groups are not.

The Future Tools of Social Media

October 23, 2009

Social media will soon become much easier with the development of new technologies specially made to enhance the social media experience and make things operate easier. Here are some of the latest technologies that are newly developed and that are predicted to be a good help in the growth and improvement of social media:

• Natural Language Processing – this is similar to Optical Pattern Recognition where the goal is to have computers automatically categorize and understand the requests and needs of their human users. This can cause developments in the future such as applications that can analyze your comments or tweets and give you suggestions on which people or brand for you to follow.

• Open ID – this is an open authentication protocol that allows its users to use one username and password for every site that they visit. Once you are authenticated, there will be a second application called OAuth that would allow you to share information about yourself with the other sites that you use. This also collects data for you so you do not have to fill in redundant information in your profile at each site that you use. This technology would help eliminate the need to fill out registration forms for sites. Aside from that you do not have to remember a lot of passwords for multiple accounts.

• Optical pattern recognition – there is now biometric face recognition technology that is being used by most police and security services to help identify criminals. Google has Neven Vision and is using their technology for its Picasa site. This helped Picasa when it comes to photo organizing. You do not have to tag each photo manually anymore – Picasa can tag the pictures automatically by recognizing the faces in your photos. These technologies are still not at their best since they are newly discovered and there is still room for improvements. But these tools can have a significant effect on how people would use social media and the internet in the future.

Add some OOMPH to your social media activities!

August 30, 2009

On Monday, August 31, 2009 TweetLater.com will be known as SocialOomph.com. TweetLater.com has decided to change their name in order to be able accommodate future expansion and to make sure that their brand won’t be in conflict of any legal rights of Twitter. “We are focusing more on providing productivity solutions to our users” according to TweetLater.com and the change of name is “an unsolicited, proactive and preemptive action on our side”. For TweetLater Users it is recommended that you do the following;

TweetLater is now SocialOomph

TweetLater is now SocialOomph

  • White-list the email address emailservice@socialoomph.com , by doing so you will still continue to received your keyword alerts and other communication from TweetLater.com.
  • For your convenience make sure to bookmark http://www.socialoomph.com.
  • After the transition all traffic to tweetlater.com will be redirected to socialoomph.com.
  • Change tweetlater” to “socialoomph” in the URL after August 31st if you are using a Status feed.
  • You don’t need to change your log in information
  • Exciting additions of the services of socialoomph.com is something that you would look forward to.

I think this is a great move and while TweetLater has become a household name with many users you must always think big.  SocialOomph leaves a lot of room to grow in size and service.  I don’t particularly like the name, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

Social Media Landscape by Fred Cavazza Redux

August 21, 2009

Following last year’s first version of my Social Media Landscape, I am induced to publish a new version to sync with the market’s latest evolutions. And I a not the only one: The Conversation Prism v2.0.

This new landscape is now spitted into four main usages (expressing, sharing, networking, playing) and is structured around social platforms which ambition is to cover each user’s needs.

Social Media Landscape (redux)

Social Media Landscape (redux)

The large size version is here : Social Media Landscape (redux).

Four Main Usages

The various tools and services displayed on this landscape are listed bellow.

1. Expressing tools allow users to express themselves, discuss and aggregate their social life:

2. Sharing tools allow users to publish and share content:

3. Networking tools allow users to search, connect and interact with each other’s:

4. Playing services that now integrate strong social features:

From Social Networks to social Platform

At the center of this landscape we will find former social networks, which have evolved to progressively integrate more and more functionalities and morphed themselves into social platforms. The notion of ‘platform‘ is particularly relevant since those network have the ability to host applications (mostly the one you find on the four main usages).

We can split social platforms into two groups: The First Generation which have been existing since more then 5 years and gather between 50 and 200 millions of users (Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, Bebo, Orkut, Skyrock, Hi5, Windows Live…) and The New Wave of social players which have a similar offering and a fast growing audience (between 20 and 50 millions users – Netlog, Imeem, Piczo, Lexode, Hyves, Buzznet, Xanga, Zorpia…).

I won’t enter in the debate to foresight which platform will grow faster or which will appeal the most to youth audience but I anticipate a rough competition for Facebook which is stile experiencing cash flow problem by sticking to the advertising model while those new social players have integrated micro-transactions and premium membership in their business model.

Google and Yahoo! are still absent from the social scene (wait, maybe not…)

You will also notice in this landscape the discretion of Google and Yahoo! which are ‘only’ represented by services that did not managed to break through the social scene (while being strong references, Blogger, YouTube, FlickR cannot be considered has dominant social platforms). Let’s be honest: MySpace and Facebook decently steal the spotlight from Google and Yahoo!.

Wait… maybe not if you consider Google as a being in a much more favorable situation with lower-level services like Gmail (one needs an email to register Facebook, right?) or Google Maps (can you count the number of social services relying on Google mapping tool?). Add to this there current cash situation and it leaves them plenty of time to sharpen their social strategy (Maybe by buying Twitter or FriendFeed, or booth!).

The same is true for Yahoo! which can rely on a massive user base (still outnumbering Facebook’s one) and essential social bricks like Delicious, Yahoo! Pipes, MyBlogLog and the promising Fire Eagle.

Did I mention Microsoft? Yes, Microsoft, those guys behind Hotmail, MSN and Windows Live. Ignoring them would be a big mistake and Mark Z. was more than happy to welcome them in FB’s capital.

From this pint of view, I expect a very thought battle around authentication services (Facebook Connect, Google Accounts…) allowing social platforms to exist outside of their boundaries and to export their members’ social graph. Big players like Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft have to emphasis their legitimacy as historical web players to keep control over their users.

I strongly recommend you to pay attention to those different services (yes, there is a life outside Facebook) and I shall meet you next year for a third version!
